Classification, fixation techniques, complications and outcomes of femur fractures in dogs and cats: 61 cases (2015-2016) Ciência Rural
Libardoni,Renato do Nascimento; Costa,Diego da; Menezes,Felipe Barretos; Cavalli,Lucas Geraldo; Pedrotti,Luís Fernando; Kohlrausch,Patrícia Regina; Minto,Bruno Watanabe; Silva,Marco Augusto Machado.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the frequency of femur fractures in dogs and cats in the routine of a school hospital, determining their classification, fixation methods, complications, and outcomes. A total of 61 animals, 50 (82.0%) dogs and 11 (18.0%) cats, had femoral fractures that were submitted to osteosynthesis. Sixty-two femoral fractures were evaluated. Single fractures in the distal epiphysis (n=25) were the most frequent (P=0.0001). Intramedullary pins were used in association with cerclage and tension band for osteosynthesis in proximal fractures. In diaphyseal fractures, bone plates and screws, two intramedullary pins (insulated or with cerclage) and Tie-In configuration were used. In distal fractures, modified...

Clinical, pathological and therapeutic findings on lingual rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,F.G.G.; Santilli,J.; Magalhães,G.M.; Calazans,S.G.; Pereira,L.F.; Mattos Junior,E.; Honsho,C.S.; Alves,C.E.F.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT The biological behaviour of the tumours vary according to the species in which they occur, its location within the cavity, clinical stage and histopathological nature. Lingual neoplasms are generally uncommon in companion animals. Rhabdomyosarcomas are malignant, solid, aggressive formations with high metastatic potential. The clinical signs are variable and a definitive diagnosis can only be reached through histopathological analysis of biopsy and necropsy specimen. In some cases, immunohistochemical study may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. This paper aims to highlight important points about this uncommon condition in dogs, using a case report of lingual rhabdomyosarcoma, which showed no evidence of metastasis after diagnosis, nor of local...

Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Santos,Renata Lara Resende; Pires,Prhiscylla Sadanã; Pereira,Luiz Carlos; Pereira,Silvia Trindade; Duarte,Marina Carvalho; Assis,Ronnie Antunes de; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
The objective of this study was to detect C. difficileA/B toxins and to isolate strains of C. perfringensand C. difficile from diarrheic and non-diarrheic dogs in Brazil. Stool samples were collected from 57 dogs, 35 of which were apparently healthy, and 22 of which were diarrheic. C. difficileA/B toxins were detected by ELISA, and C. perfringensand C. difficilewere identified by multiplex PCR. C. difficileA/B toxins were detected in 21 samples (36.8%). Of these, 16 (76.2%) were from diarrheic dogs, and five (23.8%) were from non-diarrheic dogs. Twelve C. difficile strains (21.1%) were isolated, of which ten were A+B+and two were A-B-. All non-toxigenic strains were isolated from non-diarrheic animals. The binary toxin gene cdtBwas found in one strain,...

Implementation of immobilization accessories for positioning of small animals for radiation therapy Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Vettorato,M.C.; Girotto,C.H.; Fogaça,J.L.; Vulcano,L.C.; Fernandes,M.A.R..
ABSTRACT Radiation therapy is a modality that is presenting great advances in veterinary medicine worldwide. In Brazil, this therapeutic option is underachieved. The success of this method depends on several factors, including the use of appropriate accessories for protection and immobilization of patients. For the immobilization of small animals during treatment, in addition to sedation and anesthesia, immobilizing accessories, similar to those used in human radiotherapy, are used. This study aimed to present proposals for immobilizing accessories adapted to the positioning of small animals in order to be used in radiotherapy planning. In order to achieve results, accessories were made and tested in a living animal simulating a radiotherapy planning,...

Laryngeal Rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,F.G.G.; Cintra,P.P.; Calazans,S.G.; Jorge,A.T.; Pereira,L.F.; Dias,L.G.G.G.; Olivio,M.B.; Magalhães,G.M..
ABSTRACT The larynx is part of the upper respiratory tract and is responsible for phonation. It allows air to pass between the pharynx and the trachea, but prevents food from entering the airways. Laryngeal neoplasms, including rhabdomyosarcomas, are uncommon in dogs. However, these tumors can trigger numerous progressive clinical signs related to respiratory difficulty and altered phonation. The diagnosis of laryngeal cancer should be made based on the history and symptoms of the patient, combined with complementary tests. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, combined or not with chemotherapy. In view of the low incidence of laryngeal cancer, the objective of the present work was to describe a case of laryngeal rhabdomyosarcoma detected during...
